Assignment: Reflection

I had to go back to the park to reshoot (since I was not in class, thanks to my stupid alarm). Frankly, I like it better to be able to shoot on my own, at any time of the day (preferably early morning or late evening, when the sun goes down. Since I can not stand the sun. It burns!!!)

Anyhow, I have chosen this shot for this assignment

Title: Heaven’s Refection

ISO6400, f/5.6, 1/400 sec

I was not sure if I had to take picture of both the object and its reflection. But I am quite satisfied with this shot. The whole time I was wondering if that was the reflection of the sky or the bottom of the pond. I pushed the color temperature (again, just because I love cold :)) to emphasize the color of the sky, a little bit green to represent the water. There were a lot of people in the park, so at least I did not have to accidentally shoot someone in this picture 🙂

Assignment: Frame

Title 1: Tranquility

ISO 100, F/5, 1/160 sec

This was a difficult assignment because I always had to remind myself to look at things differently, or to look for a “frame” of a picture either obvious or subtle.

I chose the above exposure because this scene is rather still, so there was no need for a fast shutter speed. I only wanted to focus on the reflection of the sky so depth of field was not desired.

The picture gave me a sense of calmness (hence the title XD). The reflection of the sky is subtly framed within the water. The leaves are scattered randomly yet beautifully. All of this coordinate well with the cold setting of the overall scene. I tried my best to choose a picture of no human touch whatsoever. And I am rather satisfied with it ^^

Title 1: Frame within Frame

ISO 100, f/5, 1/160 (oops, same exposure :-s)

In contrast with the above picture, both conceptually and technically (I suppose). This one is obviously framed and is rather experimental. At first, I tried black and white setting but I realized the gray brick would not stand out as much XD. I did not retouch anything down to the white paper next to the brick, since I believe it perfectly renders human’s presence (are we not messy creatures?). The geometric shape of the brick (in contrast with the organic flow of water in the picture above), the wall, the hole I am peeking through (XD) make up the frame within frame concept.

Setting: Daylight

ISO 1600, 18mm, f/11, 1/125 sec

Title: Salute of Nature

Reason for choosing this shot: I just enjoyed the line structure as well as the little emphasis on the tree on the right. The way one branch points up reminding me of a salute gesture. Here we are, in the woods, welcomed by nature.

It was sunny so the background was pretty much overexposed. I tried to adjust without losing any details, yet the picture still looks flat. It is a pity.

I also enjoyed the saturated green since the original was way too yellow and bright. Here it adds a tad of a somber feeling. Nature welcomes us while being cautious, I suppose 🙂

Shooting condition: Sunny (daylight setting)

Title: Reach

ISO 200, 55mm, f/5.6, 1/200 sec

Reason to choose this shot: This was the simplest shot out of all the practice shots, yet it carried a strong directional line. The branch looks frail yet full of strength and support from the many skimpy leaves. Together they carry a determination to reach out and grow 🙂

I did alter the color scheme quite a bit. Most of the time I tend to prefer a tad of blue tint in my picture, probably because it adds a particular mood.
